Zambia's telecoms regulator says that nearly 2.4 million SIM cards were disconnected at the end of last month following an extension of the registration deadline.
The government ordered that all SIM cards have their users identify registered with the mobile networks, but was forced into extending its deadline to the end of January after too few customers had done so.
Despite the extension, roughly 2.38 million SIM cards were still unregistered, and have been cut-off.
The country had registered some 7.9 million SIM cards, so the cut off ratio is about double the average that most countries had suffered in the past when mandating SIM card registration.
