Zimbabwe based Econet Wireless has been forced by the telecoms regulator to reverse a 60% cut in its voice call tariffs.
Econet reduced its call rates from 25 cents per-minute to 10 cents per minute. The move was in response to cuts initiated by Vimplecom subsidiary, Telecel.
In a statement, Econet Wireless said: "Last week, we made a commitment to provide you with better value, announcing we were cutting our tariffs to 10c. Today, we are sad to inform you we are now being prevented from offering you that cheaper rate. We promise we are working hard, against all odds, to ensure that the new call charges you have been enjoying remain, for your benefit."
The regulator says that it has to approve any changes to tariffs before they can be offered to customers.
The mobile network says that the regulator does not have the authority to interfere in tariff matters and is fighting the decision.
